$160W: 5-10, 11; 12.5 oz. (size 7) M: 7-12, 13, 14; 14.6 oz. (size 9) The GTX is the Gore-Tex version of the XT Wings S-Lab we reviewed in December. The GTX retains the midsole and outsole features our testers raved about last year: a flexible-yet-stable, cushioned-yet-low-profile ride that reacts well from asphalt to technical trails due to the integration of components that Salomon cleverly calls their “AC Tendon” (AC for Agility/Cushioning). The upper, however, was fairly severely compromised in this version with the inclusion of the Gore-Tex layer and the required “booty” design to ensure waterproofing. Testers unanimously called the uppers stiff and hot, although many noted that this improved after a few runs in them. On cold, sloppy winter runs, however, that protection was appreciated — particularly when combined with gaiters. In sum: Choose these if you often need protection from severe elements and want that protection combined with a very runable midsole, but go for the non-Gore version if you want a lighter, more flexible shoe for faster-paced running.
